Once I decided on where to mount the FloMax
I then knew which side of the filter I would run the fuel lines to.
So the first thing I did was install the plugs in the ports I was
not going to use.
|
|
Next I could attach the
brass fittings. The Permatex thread sealant is used on all threaded
fittings.
|
|
Now it was time to locate the fuel line I
was going to cut. Here's a photo of the underside of the Jeep.
Locate the stock fuel lines coming from the top of the gas tank.
|
|
The fuel supply line is clearly marked on
my Cherokee and I labeled this as line "A". This is the
line you want to trace to where you want to make the cut. Line "B"
is also a hard line coming from the tank but it is slightly smaller
in diameter. This line is a vapor line that goes from the tank to
the EVAP canister. If you have a 96 and earlier XJ, you will likely
have a 3rd hard line. This is because on earlier models, the fuel
regulator is located at the fuel rail instead of on the pump module.
That 3rd line will be a fuel return line back to the tank. The other
hoses in my picture are air hoses for my air tank and ARB lockers.
|
I traced the fuel supply line (line "A")
down to where I wanted to make the cut. This spot looked like the
best place - pretty easy to get to and works well for routing the
hoses to and from the FloMax filter.
|
|
Use caution in cutting the fuel line. Make
sure the area is well ventilated and there are no sources of fire
nearby. Also wrap a shop rag around the line since some fuel will
leak out. Avoid using power tools as you don't want to create any
sparks. A hack saw blade is what I used and didn't take too long to
cut through the tube.
|
|
At this point I could estimate the lengths
of hose I would need. Since 4' of hose was more than enough, I
estimated the lengths a little on the long side so that after
mounting the FloMax I could trim the hose to the exact length if I
needed to.
|
|
With the hoses being different lengths it
was easy to remember which hose needed to go into which port. The
top of the FloMax is clearly marked for which port is "IN"
and which one is "OUT". I attached the hoses to the FloMax
prior to mounting it on the Jeep.
|
|
Then I attached the rubber
hoses to the appropriate sides of the hard fuel line.
|
|
This last photo shows the FloMax mounted at
the completion of the install. I turned the Jeep on and checked all
fittings for leaks. Success!
|
|
My experiences with installing the FloMax
so far are very positive. The installation was actually easier than
I thought it would be. I plan on reporting back after a few thousand
miles and I change the filter to show you what is inside. Until then
I feel better knowing that my fuel injectors are getting clean fuel!
